God bless the new Pope for calling out all the blind Christians out there who preach the false gospel of wealth and bow down to the pagan altar of unregulated markets. As a Protestant sickened and deeply disturbed by the American Christian Right’s unholy alliance with the Party of No, and its twisted idea that charity can substitute for regulating and taxing greed, this Pope makes me want to convert.
The recently departed Paul Crouch symbolized the Christian Right’s rationalization for an era of greed and excess that we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age. Here is a guy that was so deluded by his own grandeur that he conned his followers into donating their hard earned money to finance a life of gaudy nouveau-riche excess, with a private jet, dozens of homes, mansions, a ranch and a mountain retreat. He was so rich, that his wife (who painted her face and teased her hair like a street walker) built a one hundred thousand dollar mobile home for her dogs – with tax exempt donations!
Yes Crouch funneled donations to help the poor as well, but he ran his empire like a typical CEO, except instead of fleecing common shareholders, he ripped off his loyal subjects. Worse, an odious stench of hypocrisy lingers when I think to myself: What’s better: A government taxing the rich to redistribute obscene wealth to starving minimum wage workers so they can buy food stamps, or a televangelist guilting minimum wage workers into redistributing their paychecks so his wife can build a gigantic dog house?
So the next time a hard core evangelical right wing Tea Party zealot tries to tell you how evil and corrupt the “GOVMINT” is, remind him of that story. And don’t forget to tell him to listen to Pope Francis.
PS – And Rush Limbaugh, shut your fat trap you disgusting, hypocritical monster of a human being. How dare you attack someone who actually walks the walk.
“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matthew 24:24
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Matthew 17:5
” . . . and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” Matthew 24:11
